In the heart of the City of Newark, an ambitious K-12 school was created on the old Star Ledger Newspaper property. This six-story (162,500 square feet) school building and reuse of an existing three-story parking garage are located within the boundaries of the 2008 redevelopment area called the “Newark Downtown Plan.” For children’s outdoor activities a rubber surfaced courtyard play space was created along with utilizing the top floor (roof) of the parking garage as another outdoor play area. This charter school opened in 2018 and the North Star Academy receives the National Blue Ribbon School Award by the US Department of Education.
Thia award is given to less than 1% of schools nationwide.
